A tragic accident resulting in three fatalities occurred around 7:30 a.m. in Whitewater, a small town roughly 15 minutes northwest of Palm Springs. California Highway Patrol officers were called to the scene on the eastbound 10 Freeway near Haugen-Lehmann Way.

Initial findings revealed that a 31-year-old man from Indio was driving a black 2022 Tesla Model 3 in the third lane on the eastbound 10 Freeway. At the same time, a 39-year-old man from Anaheim was driving a red 2001 Chevrolet Suburban in the second lane, traveling in the same direction. For reasons still under investigation, the two vehicles collided.

The collision forced the Suburban’s driver to lose control, resulting in a crash into the center divider. The impact led to the vehicle overturning and six passengers being ejected from the car, with a seventh passenger partially ejected.

A 10-year-old girl, a 12-year-old girl, and a 31-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the scene. Four additional passengers, a 3-year-old girl, a 7-year-old girl, an 11-year-old girl, and a 15-year-old boy suffered severe injuries and were airlifted to the hospital. The Suburban’s driver sustained moderate injuries, while a 41-year-old passenger had minor injuries.

The statement mentioned that all the Chevrolet’s occupants were related and lived in Anaheim, California. Preliminary findings suggested that not all passengers in the Suburban had their seatbelts or safety restraints fastened at the time of the accident.
