After experiencing a car accident, there are a wide variety of injuries that one can possibly suffer from. From spinal and neck injuries to broken bones to severe internal injuries, getting in a car accident can put your health at risk in a variety of ways. One of the most common injuries that one can encounter in a car accident is a concussion. You may be vaguely familiar with concussions, be it through sports injuries or otherwise. It’s incredibly important to protect your head from any sort of injury, so in part one of this two-part blog series, we will look at concussions and how they affect us.
What is a Concussion?
While many of us have a loose understanding of a concussion, most of us are unaware of the specifics that surround it. Quite simply put, a concussion is a traumatic brain injury. This can be caused by hitting your head, falling down or any other injury that causes a blow to your head. The scariest part of having a concussion is that a person can have a concussion without even knowing it. This is why it’s incredibly important to be aware of your surroundings, and if you find yourself suffering a blow to the head, to be sure that you aren’t concussed. Once someone has suffered a concussion, it can cause them to lose consciousness or feel drowsy. Additionally, because of the sudden nature that comes along with common scenarios of concussions (like car accidents), many people forget the events leading up to when they experienced a head injury. While this can be problematic when later trying to recall details of the incident, it can also be dangerous in that, as we stated earlier, a person can forget that the accident even happened, causing them to be completely unaware of the fact that they may indeed have a concussion.
Now that you have a better understanding of what concussions are, in part two of our blog series, we will look at a few of the potential effects that having a concussion can have on you, as well as things that you can do to prevent them.
